The Timeline of a Missionary in Quarantine

Mom Notes:

Elder Hadley asked if me today if I would write down some of his experiences these last 10 days up to this point and we all know this blog has become his journal. He could write a book just on this week alone but don’t worry I wrote the book for him. 😁 This post is more for Parker than anything so he can have this documented. We have felt every emotion you could imagine and then some and years down the road we will be glad we have the timeline of this historic event.

Sunday 3/15 Argentina closed their boarders due to the close relationship they have with Italy. There were 12 direct flights a day that would go Italy from the Ezeiza International Airport which was Parker’s last area and about 20 mins from where he is now.

Thursday 3/19 Parker went to the Ward Mission Leaders home to video call us and tell us that the whole country was going to be quarantined and boarders were going to be closed until 3/31 (this was later extended to April 13th). Their quarantine experience was going to be different from ours because police and military were going to be in the streets.

Only one person from each family could leave to go to the store. If there was more than one person then you would be arrested. Parker and his companion were told to go to the store before quarantine and buy groceries which they did not find very much food and then they would have to carry their food for quite a distance. We said goodbye and he said I will talk to you again in April.

Sunday 3/22 Received a Letter from President Fernandez that all missionaries were leaving South America. Sister Fernandez messaged us later that night and gave us Elder Hadley’s phone number and said that we could call it on Monday, but he could not call us with it being an old flip phone without international calling.

Monday 3/23 Tried for over an hour to be able to make a call to Argentina using many different options. We finally got through and his companion answered in Spanish. We kept saying Elder Hadley, Elder Hadley and Elder Marino said we are sleeping (it was noon) and hung up on us.  We did not even know if we were calling Argentina at that point. We called again and same companion answered, and we said Elder Hadley again and he responded, Elder Hadley Mom?

Finally, Parker got the phone. We told him that we had permission to call from his Mission Mom. We talked about his feelings about the news he had heard the day before about leaving his mission. He was frustrated and confused since he had a strong feeling that they would be staying in Argentina and just wait it out.

Parker understood why they were moving the missionaries and trusted that his next step would be what was supposed to happen. Parker told us that he has worked as hard and he could these last 9 months the minute he became a missionary and realizes that he had a lot of great experiences and success in just 9 months.

Some of his missionary buddies were able to call him which made him happy to talk with them. His CCM buddies said they had been trying to get his phone number for 3 days! We were very glad that he could now talk with them and they could help each other during this time.
We asked him when he would like us to call him again and he said Wednesday to check in on him.

Wednesday 3/25 Parker sounded very tired and drained. They were eating 1 meal a day. It was planned that the members would bring the missionaries lunch each day, but Parker’s area is a 30 min drive away and that is a lot to ask of the members while the police and military were in the streets. The neighboring mission had four missionaries arrested so they did not want to take a chance of going to the store since they have to go in pairs.

We asked him what he was eating, and he said eggs and rice and he would only eat enough until his stomach would stop hurting. They tried to teach some people through their flip phone on Monday, but it just did not work as well as they had hoped, and they have never taught this way before. They said that most of Argentina was sleeping and only waking up to eat so calling to teach a lesson was not as promising as they had hoped.

With very little food they were not exercising and doing their best to keep up their energy up. He has said that on Tuesday the day before they had slept for 20 hours.

During this conversation Parker was also giving us a list of what he would like to eat when he gets home. He main question was, Is Café Rio still open? 😂

A video was posted on social media of President Uchtdorf that was to give comfort to those missionaries processing the changes with their missionary assignments. Parker’s Mission President had posted it in Spanish and English. We asked him if he wanted to hear it and he said yes then asked if we had it in Spanish so that his companion could also listen to it.

We put the video on the speaker phone and listened for 5 mins of this beautiful message throughout our home in Spanish. This was a moment I will not forget. A message from an Apostle to help let them know they are not alone and a message of guidance that was recorded that same day and was able to be heard by two missionaries with a flip phone in a small humble apartment in the middle of Buenos Aires.

The Lord cares about each and every one of us and it was such a blessing to play a part in delivering that message to two of the Lord’s missionaries.

Parker asked us to call them the next day and check in on them.

Thursday 3/26 We called for a couple minutes in the morning and told him we would call back later that night to talk more. Parker said that he and his companion had decided to fast for the day. We told them that we did not think that was a good idea and asked if they were fasting to save food and he said Yes. We talked them into eating an orange and not fasting for the day. They also were out of toilet paper but had a really nasty bidet in their apartment. 😳

I also told Elder Hadley that some of the people he had taught from Argentina had been contacting me and I was able to share Elder Uchtdorf’s message in Spanish with them. Parker was so excited that his Mom back in Utah was able to do some missionary work for him in Argentina since he could not.

Thursday evening there was a change in Parker’s voice for the better! They found a guy who would deliver a pizza to them in their apartment!!! Parker ordered two and said it was a huge miracle!!! We said it was like manna dropped down from heaven! He ate one pizza that night and saved the other for the next day. You could tell his energy was back.

Parker had been calling a bunch of pizzerias all week and finally one had answered their phone. More great news was that he heard that they were trying to get the BAS missionaries home for Conference. This was the first we had heard of anything of an actual time frame. This was a great phone call and we all slept better that night.

Friday 3/27 Elder Hadley and Elder Marino got a smart phone brought to them!!! Parker called us from Goggle Hangouts (no video). He said he hit the jackpot because in 12 hours he got a pizza and a smart phone! The Mission President said this would help the missionaries to be able to communicate with their families!  It was fantastic to be able to speak with them and President had given them permission to go to the store to get more food and toilet paper.

The Elder’s Quorum President came and picked them up and this was a big sacrifice for him to leave because he lives a 30 min drive from their apartment. Elder Hadley does not live in his area and to get to his area they wait at a bus stop for 40 mins for a bus to show up then travel 20 mins to get to his area.

Since the buses are not working and they have to stay inside, this was a risky move with police and military out, but they quickly left. They ducked down in the car and when they got out Elder Hadley and Elder Marino split up in the store and quickly grabbed some items, so it did not look like they were together. They quickly drove back, and Parker said it was like he was a Deer during Hunting Season and he prefers to be on the other side of the gun.

At 9:00pm Buenos Aires time Parker took the phone out to the porch listen and experience something special. Every night and 9:00 the community comes out to clap and whistle. This is not the norm but has been happening every night since the quarantine. It is a great sense of community to feel united through this ritual each night.

We were able to play on the speaker phone President Nelson’s message of hope and invitation to fast for this great companionship. We have been able to have some incredible conversations and times of reflection that have invited the Spirit during such a stressful situation.

Saturday 3/28 Parker called us with great news Saturday morning and he said they are flying us out on Monday morning!!! Such a huge relief and we all celebrated but it also sunk in that he was hours away from leaving Argentina. Such mixed emotions for all of us!

We talked about how to pack strategically because we had heard of many missionaries having to leave suitcases behind. Packing a missionary for Argentina is no small feat since you cannot mail them anything and then bringing it all back proves to also be difficult.

We told him to back only the most important things that he could not replace in his backpack. Plan to leave his carry on and pack his two suitcases with the thought in mind on leaving one behind. We sent him with a luggage scale and that has been very helpful for him. Since his bags had been packed since Sunday, he had already weighed all three suitcases to 50 lbs. including his carry on which had all of his MTC Spanish books. McKay told him he could leave those behind, and she would give him her Spanish books.

Parker left all 14 of his white shirts (7 short, 7 long) behind except the one his was wearing. He gave one of his suits to his companion and he was very excited because it fit him well. He also left his sleeping bag and many other things that I think he did not want to tell me about.

They tried to go to a store again on their own to buy a few things now that they knew Parker was leaving but the little stores were closed, and the police started coming down the street so they hurried back to their apartment. Parker ordered his last Argentine pizza and he was ready to come home.

Sunday 3/29 The underground operation to get Elder Hadley out of Argentina was starting. Parker called us this afternoon just before a member was coming to pick him up. The member was also bringing Elder Morales from Mexico City to become Elder Marino’s new companion. Elder Morales is new to the mission and Parker hopes that he can use some of the things that he left.  They will also soon leave the mission, but we don’t know when.

This is a huge sacrifice for these members to help transport these missionaries on a Sunday and leaving their families hoping that they don’t get arrested. Parker said that it does not look very good to drive up and pick up a foreigner with large black suitcases.

The member was taking Elder Hadley to a Stake Center an hour away to meet up with all of the North America missionaries tonight where they will stay the night. At around 2:00-3:00am they will start to move the missionaries to the airport and two charter planes will leave around 7:00am and fly directly to Salt Lake City (11-12 hours) with no layovers. This is also a huge blessing that it is a straight flight!
We told Parker to grab a couch in the foyer to sleep and he said they have plenty of pews for all the missionaries. Tonight, he is planning to have his final interview with President Fernandez which I am sure will be a tender moment.

While we were talking to Elder Hadley his ride showed up, so he needed to give the phone back to his companion. But before he did this, we said family prayer together and prayed for all those helping with this enormous task and these incredible missionaries that are saying goodbye to a time that is so precious to them including Elder Hadley.

So now we wait… and hope that everything goes as planned for the first flight out of Argentina!

Letter from President and Sister Fernandez

Mom Notes:

While out on a walk today we received an email from Parker’s Mission President stating that they are going to be sending Elder Hadley back home. We are so sad for Parker and the entire Buenos Aire South Mission! Here is the letter we received.

Dear Parents,

By way of this letter, we want to bring you up-to-date related to the missionary work in this part of the Lord’s vineyard.

After extensive consultation with Brethren in Salt Lake and the Missionary Department, and keeping uppermost in their minds the safety and well-being of each missionary, the Area Presidency has determined to return all foreign missionaries serving in the South America South Area to their home countries to be reassigned to a mission in that country.
This means that your son Elder Hadley will be returning home in the following weeks and their travel itineraries will be shared with you once they have been finalized.  We want to also stress that given the current challenges related to international travel, the return will be completed as soon as feasible based on the availability of flights.

We are deeply grateful to have been blessed with the opportunity to serve with such special young men and women in this, the Lord’s work.  It has been a privilege to be in their presence in the Buenos Aires South Mission.  May the Lord continue to bless them always!

Sincerely

President and Sister Fernandez

We have not heard from Parker, but we did reach out to Sister Fernandez. She told us that they don’t know when the missionaries are going back home, and she is afraid that because of the mandatory quarantine in Argentina it will have to be after March 31st.

She said that tomorrow is p-day and they are not able to go out of their apartments, but she gave us his phone number and permission for us to call him. It will be an international call for us because he only has a cheap flip phone that he shares with his companion.

Sister Fernandez told us that they will sure miss Elder Hadley and they are heart broken. They are sending 151 missionaries home from the BAS Mission.

We love Elder Hadley’s Mission President and his wife so much and cannot imagine what they are going through as they have a also missionary son serving here in Utah. We will continue to pray for their family and all the BAS Missionaries as they continued to be under quarantine and pray that the boarders will open for these missionaries to return home.

President and Sister Fernandez posted this on the Mission Facebook Page.

“It’s not about WHERE we serve, it’s about HOW we serve and WHO we serve! WE SERVE with all our heart, might mind and strength THE LORD JESUS CHRIST; this is HIS work. Each of us is a worker in HIS vineyard. He calls us and we obey. If we do what’s right, we have no need to fear, for the Lord, our helper, will ever be near. But an unseen power will aid me and you in the glorious cause of truth!”

Les amo mucho,

Elder Hadley’s Mom

Elder Hadley Update in Argentina

Mom Notes:

Tonight, we had a surprise video call from Elder Hadley who was at the Ward Mission Leaders House. The President of Argentina closed their boarders last Sunday, so no one is allowed in or out of Argentina. The President is also starting a mandatory quarantine for all of Argentina tonight.

Quarantine is a little different there, if you leave your apartment the police will come and escort you back to your home or arrest you.

Only one person from each family can leave to go to the store which makes it tricky for a missionary companionship. They went to the store to see what they could get, and they purchased, rice, pasta, onions, oranges, soy sauce, chicken seasoning and you guess it…Toilet Paper!

They could not buy any meat, but he figures he will just lose some more weight! 😂

His apartment is very humble with very little and they have one flip phone for the companionship to be able to text the Mission President.

We asked what he had to keep him busy during the quarantine and he said he has his Book of Mormon and Bible to study and will work on his Spanish.

Parker's Mission President asked the missionaries today to dress very casual and to take off their name tags for safety reasons. Safety has proved to be a concern especially for the Americans.

We talked openly with him on how to prepare if his mission assignment changes and this was his response.

“Worry is payment on a debt you may never owe…..Shirley Hadley”.

We had a good laugh because that is a quote said often by his Grandma Hadley!

One year ago, today Parker received his call to the “Argentina, Buenos Aires South Mission” and we had never seen such a reaction from him, or any other future missionary! This was and still is his DREAM mission call and we all knew it, that was probably this reason for all of our reactions.

I posted the video of him opening his call on Facebook today along with the GIF he made of his famous fist pump. We were able to show the video and GIF to him through our screen.

This is a moment I will not forget while watching him and his beaming smile, one year later in Argentina, rewatch his moment! Seeing that video of him will carry him through this bump in the road and he said, “Man I love that GIF”!

Elder Hadley is praying for all of us and told us to keep his two Grandma’s inside! He also said to tell Grandma Condie Happy Birthday and that he loves her so much!

We were able to have a special family prayer before we hung up and he is ready to take on this challenge with the help from his Heavenly Father.  Elder Hadley is hoping to talk with us again possibly on March 31st .

We ask for your prayers not just for Elder Hadley, but all the missionaries and their families who are dealing with these times of uncertainly.

As the Hadley Family, we are moving forward with “Faith not Fear” and know that Elder Hadley is being watched over and is right where he is supposed to be!

Domingo got Baptized on a Domingo

¡Hola! ¿Como están? Everything down here is all about the Coronavirus....and how the mission work will continue in a little bit of a different matter. If I were at home I would have never thought about these kinds of things, all I would have thought is "Great! No more church!" Jaja  But now... it's a lot more work on my part as a missionary dealing with this virus situation! Jaja It is good I'm staying busy!

This week we were told to buy 2 weeks worth of nonperishable food to prepare for a quarantine. Not sure when this would happen but it would be very difficult in our living situation and not sure how we would be able to communicate with our families.

Right now we are not allowed to contact people (no clapping in front of the houses) and can only go to houses who know us and would let us in. Contacting people is part of being a missionary but we are making the most of it!

We had a Baptism! This guy is a "Capo!" (A Stud!) Domingo Vegas is a 40-year-old with schizophrenia. When I first met him here in Ciudad Evita, I really just thought that we went to go share a nice little message and that no way he could get baptized.

To take care of his condition he Smoked...a lot. It was hard to understand what he was saying for a while and he was also taking pamphlets from the Jehovah's Witnesses... it was a little tricky. Through a Miracle from God Domingo these last 2 weeks went to the doctor and got some medication to slow everything down. He was able to drop smoking and repent for past sins. Domingo was only aloud to have his sister come to his baptism with the Coronavirus situation, but I have never seen a 40-year-old so happy to get his picture taken in front of the church. He is excited to send this picture to his mom in Paraguay and for her to see him take his steps into a completely new life. We are so happy with him and his decision to get baptized on a Domingo (Sunday) 😁!

Yesterday my comp and I blessed the sacrament 8 times walking all over the ward boundaries. After blessing and administering The Sacrament 8 times my companion and I said to each other, in castellano (Argentine Spanish) of course, "I feel very blessed after doing that." It’s been almost a year since I've blessed the sacrament just because the Latinos all have it taken care of or I was with a bunch of Priests back at home, we only have about 25 Priests at home 😂. With all the administering that occurred yesterday made me think of when the first Santa Cena (Sacrament) was done.

In Matthew 26:26-28 It discusses about some of the significance of the Sacrament and how important it is to take it every week.

26 And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body.
27 And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it;
28 For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.

I first want to challenge those that choose not to take the sacrament or are unworthy to take it to look to Him.  Obviously, we all need to follow Him but when we look to Him, we only see Him and not the world full of sin and distractions. He will guide you, I promise, and He wants you to be happy, not the world.

And for those who are already taking it look at it from a different perspective. I challenge you all to think of how you would feel if you didn't partake of the Sacrament. Then you might realize how much you depend on our Savior. For me, I need him every living moment in my life because I'm not perfect and want him to lead me throughout this life. I need to have my eye single to Him.

I love you all and hope you all stay safe, and clean from the Coronavirus and Enjoy that Spring Air for me Jaja! Love you all!

Les amo mucho,
Elder Hadley

Learning in my Youth

¡Hola! ¿Como andan? Espero que todo está bien en Los Estados Unidos! (I hope everything is fine in United States) This last week was another very hot and humid week, but I got a good feeling it is gonna start cooling down in the next 2 weeks.

We unfortunately didn't have any baptisms this week but are planning to have one maybe two this next Sunday! It is super exciting to see people leave their worldly addictions and move to a better path full of light, which is of Christ.

We all know how much Elder Hadley loves the construction service projects so this last week we helped another "Newly Wed" Couple lay the foundation to their house... on the roof of the "In-laws" Jaja it was fun!

Friday was the pre-service project hauling gravel up to do some of the columns and then Saturday we did the "Roof/Floor" of the house! Lots of work for sure but I love helping out where I know I can.

Time flies in the mission Jaja, I laugh because before my mission when I read other missionary’s emails and they would talk about how quickly the time goes they weren’t joking! When I started out in the field, I thought very funny but today is my 8-month mark already!! I just finished my 6th transfer and knowing that halfway is right around the corner, I realize how much more work I have to do, but with the time the Lord has given me it is important for me to stay focused and dedicated all the time.

In my studies this last week I came across a scripture that stood out to me. Alma 37:33-35 hits it home for me.

33 Preach unto them repentance, and faith on the Lord Jesus Christ; teach them to humble themselves and to be meek and lowly in heart; teach them to withstand every temptation of the devil, with their faith on the Lord Jesus Christ.
34 Teach them to never be weary of good works, but to be meek and lowly in heart; for such shall find rest to their souls.
35 O, remember, my son, and learn wisdom in thy youth; yea, learn in thy youth to keep the commandments of God.

I related when Alma is telling Helaman to learn from the wisdom in his youth, to always keep the commandments of God.

Down here I see the small things that I learned in my youth. Sort of like I've been studying my whole life and know that for these 2 years, this is that test. You want to do your best right now; but like I have said in the past that after two years, it doesn't change.

Yes, I won't be going door to door clapping my hands and asking if they would like to join His church by getting baptized; but by keeping myself on that Straight and Narrow path I know that He will guide me. Without that Guidance of the Holy Spirit we are lost.

I now would like to challenge you all to obtain that Spirit. If you don't have it right now, get it! I promise you all that with the Spirit and the Holy Scriptures we have and ACT on it, we can be Happy!

Love you all and hope March Madness is staying alive!

Les amo mucho,
Elder Hadley

Mom Note: This is our neighbor and Parker's buddy Carter! Parker would drive Carter to and from school last year at Farmington High School!

A couple of weeks ago Parker asked me to do a favor for him, he asked me to go buy a very very hard puzzle with many pieces and give it to Carter and tell him it was from Elder Hadley. We had no idea that Carter liked puzzles.

Each day when Parker would pick Carter up at his classroom he was always working on a big puzzle. When we bought this to Carter he was so excited and starting clapping and jumping up and down. He was so excited to receive a new puzzle and he instantly wanted to talk to Parker to tell him thank you!

It was a very special moment and we felt privileged to experience this through Parker! As you can see Carter finished his puzzle in record time and we were able to send this picture to Elder Hadley this week!

Same Day Wedding and Baptism

¡Hola! Buenos Aires is having one of their hottest weeks before the temperature starts to drop so ya, not too fun, but it is just for a little bit. We had a very busy week with Zone Conference, a Marriage, and a Baptism.

At the beginning of the week, I got a little sick (not the first time) with eating undercooked meat, but it passed after a day and I got right back to work.

On Thursday we had an awesome Zone Conference to learn a little bit more on details and answers to questions that some friends of the Church might have for us. One of them is "Why does the church have the name Jesus Christ in it and where can we find evidence that this is the only and true church on earth?"

It is quite interesting and in fact we are the only "big" church with His full and complete name. I learned a lot at Zone Conference, had hamburgers, and was able to catch up with some of the old Elders.

Friday was a fun day in Ciudad Evita. In the morning at 11:00 we went to Town Hall where our friend Segundo (Age 65) finally got married to his wife, Betty (Age 75). They are so awesome! After the marriage we left and had lunch with some members then started to fill the font for Segundo's Baptism.

After his baptism they had a little party to celebrate the wedding and the baptism with family and ward members with a lot of sandwiches, pizzas, and empanadas. We got special permission to stay out a little later with them from the President! Jaja This last week was way fun and we are very happy how everything went down.

To end on a spiritual note, I'd like to share another scripture that I encountered in my Personal Studies this last week. In Alma 38:9 It talks about the only way we can return to God and experience true happiness.

“And now, my son, I have told you this that ye may learn wisdom, that ye may learn of me that there is no other way or means whereby man can be saved, only in and through Christ. Behold, he is the life and the light of the world. Behold he is the word of truth and righteousness.”

I love how in most chapters in The Book of Mormon at the end of the chapter it puts a "goal" or the "cause and effect" scenario that we can apply to our own lives.

I'd like to challenge you all to open your scriptures, study, and apply what you find to your lives. As a representative of Him, I promise you will find what you are looking for. Maybe it's how to get back on the straight and narrow path? Or how can I be happier? Just do it, I know you all are busy, but when we put the Lord first, he can do a 180 on your life for the good!

Love you all tons, know you all are in my prayers. Make a Bracket for March Madness for me with Duke winning it all!

Les amo mucho,
Elder Hadley
